::> Integramplus and μBuilder joint training event, IMT-Bucharest, Romania, 3-5 December 2007 [...details]

In the period 3rd to 5th of December 2007, a course presenting two ECfunded projects on microfluidics will be offered at IMT-Bucharest. The two projects have set out to increase knowledge in microfluidcs and provide scientists and engineers with little or no knowledge in microfluidics and microsystem technology, an introduction and kick start. During the course you will learn about potential applications, the technologies offered by the project partners and how to design in these technologies. By the end of the
course, you should be able to make simple designs in the technologies presented and make use of the dedicated software that will be used in two separate hands-on sessions offering introduction to design and simulation using state-of-the-art software.

::> ICT Call 3 will be launched on 4th December [...details]

ICT Call 3 will be launched on 4th December. The call – already fully described in the Workprogramme of course - will involve eight objectives, and is funded at €265m. The call will close on 8th April 2008.

Three of these objectives re-open areas which were already included in ICT Call 1. These are:

  • Cognitive systems. interaction, robotics
  • Digital libraries and technology-enhanced learning
  • Intelligent contents and semantics

Proposers who were unsuccessful in these areas in the first call are of course very likely to be now considering a re-submission. Evidently, those most likely to be successful are those who scored highly last time, reaching the reserve list but not quite the funding list. Given that the funded proposals are now taken out of the competition, they should stand a better chance this time. But proposers who scored poorly cannot just cross their fingers and hope for better luck; the evaluation is not a lottery or a matter of luck, it is based on a detailed analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of a proposal by skilled and experienced experts.

Proposers should look for faults which lost them points last time which can now be fixed. Defects in the project management plan, inadequate plans for dissemination, re-balancing of the effort between workpackages etc. are all things which can be corrected in a re-submission. But if the failing was in the scientific and technical quality of the basic project idea, then there is little chance of success. Such a proposal, which scored low last time and which is simple resubmitted, perhaps with some cosmetic alterations, is sure to score low this time too.

For medical applications, they are the key component of implantable dosing systems, sphincter prosthetics and infusion systems. In industrial process technology or consumer applications, such as dosing of scents, micropumps have further promising perspectives. A multitude of institutes and companies are active in the field of micropump development. This seminar will give an overview about current micropump development and promising future applications. The seminar will also give an insight to the challenges of transferring microfluidic research developments to industrial manufactured products. This one-day workshop at the Fraunhofer IZM is of interest for engineers and scientists who utilize micropumps or would like to acquire particular knowledge in this field.

STIMESI MEMS Training Course Program- MEMS Design and INTEGRAMplus Silicon MEMS Prototyping Services
, Institute of Electron Technology (ITE), Warsaw, Poland - 16-19 April 2007 [..details]

QinetiQ provides microsystems solutions based on 3 core silicon MEMS process technology families: Polysilicon surface micromachining, Metal-nitride surface micromachining, SOI micromachining using deep dry etching. A broad range of applications has been demonstrated in these processes. Low-cost access services continue to be supported as part of the INTEGRAMplus EUROPRACTICE service, both as multi-project wafers (MPW) for prototyping and single-project wafers (SPW) for intermediate volumes with added flexibility. Each process is supported by a design handbook containing information to enable design and simulation of devices, which has also been encoded into CAD support files for L-Edit™ and CoventorWare™.
This 4-day course will be given by a combination of academic experts, industrial designers and software developers. It provides an overview of MEMS processing technologies and how to approach the design of MEMS devices. Underpinning concepts of micro-mechanics (with worked examples of accelerometer and gyroscope) and microfluidics, electronic transduction techniques, and the principles of Finite Element Analysis will be reviewed. This will be followed by tutorials on the INTEGRAMplus silicon MEMS processes, design rules and introduce various design tools for analytical design, layout and simulation (circuit-level and finite element). This course will also introduce for the first time concepts and drivers for multi-domain integration and INTEGRAMplus microfluidic services. The emphasis throughout is to provide participants with hands-on experience to reinforce learning through a combination of group exercises and the use of CAD tools over the final 2 days. Practical design tutorials with case studies in CoventorWare will be included and there is also dedicated time for participants to develop their own design ideas. Participants will have the opportunity to continue to develop their skills through post-course homework and support.

>> 12th International Workshop on Thermal Investigations of ICs and Systems- THERMINIC 2006, 27-29 September 2006, Côte d'Azur

THERMINIC Workshops are a series of events to discuss the essential thermal questions of microelectronic microstructures and electronic parts in general. These questions are becoming more and more crucial with the increasing element density of circuits packaged together and with the move to nanotechnology. These trends are calling for thermal simulation, monitoring and cooling. Thermal management is expected to become an increasingly dominating factor of a system’s cost. The growing power dissipated in a package, the mobile parts of microsystems raise new thermal problems to be solved in the near future necessitating the regular discussion of the experts in these fields. Finally, there is an increasing need for accurate assessment of the boundary conditions used in the analysis of electronic parts, which requires a concurrent solution of the thermal behaviour of the whole system.
